Reduce costs and increase reliability with a preventive maintenance concept for smart instrumentation networks

Asset Performance & Productivity Enhancement

Abstract: Today smart instruments use digital communication technologies to provide multi variable process and diagnostic information. For Instrumentation and DCS, corrective maintenance plans are standard by default, normally driven by a fix schedule or unplanned activities. Field networks or buses are often not considered in the scope of preventive maintenance but as part of reactive troubleshooting in case of problems. This presentation will describe several aspects related to a well-thought preventive maintenance strategy for smart instrumentation. The major benefits and savings will be illustrated with practical and real examples from O&G and Primaries industries. The main reasons to justify such a preventive maintenance strategy are to improve reliability, solve issues before they get critical, shorten costly downtimes and in case of unforeseeable issues get back to normal operations quickly. This includes procedures and best practices for • Inspection and audit of physical installations • Analysis of the installed base, assessment of field network communication and device integration for new devices • Device replacement and configuration strategy
