Essentials of Alarm Rationalization

Alarm Management

Abstract: Efficient Alarm Rationalization requires several important steps like preparing a an effective Alarm Philosophy, capturing alarm history long enough to be able to conduct a baseline study, a thorough understanding of DCS point configuration , preparing a list of process alarm setpoints prior to D&R exercise and having a database of inputs from package units and how they are handled.

Several of the above steps are usually carried out during the D&R exercise itself after mobilization of the consultant. This happens for a variety of reasons and leads to wastage of time during rationalization exercise.

This paper presents the progress of Alarm Management in Kuwait Oil Compay (KOC) and the strategy adapted by KOC to obtain a 100% rationalization is discussed.
